Root Canal Therapy

The dreaded root canal actually has an unfair reputation. Root canal therapy is associated with pain because the symptoms leading up to root canal treatment are often dramatic and memorable.

Root canal therapy actually relieves pain and sets you on a course to healing and feeling like yourself again! As with all procedures in our office, we always strive to make treatment painless and completely comfortable.

Why Do I Need a Root Canal?

A root canal is typically needed to treat a significant infection in your tooth or near the tip of the root. On an x-ray, the infection may appear as a dark area.

Symptoms of an infection typically start out mild and then gradually worsen as inflammation increases. Any infection inside your body puts your overall health at risk and should be addressed quickly and effectively.

Other signs that may indicate you need a root canal could include:

  • Swelling
  • Jaw or facial pain
  • Discoloration of your tooth
  • Throbbing
  • Sensitivity to hot temperatures
  • A small lesion on your gums

Causes of Infections

An infection can occur because of a wide variety of conditions. Sometimes, they are simply unexplained!

  • Trauma
  • Repeated clenching and grinding
  • Deep decay
  • Periodontal disease
  • A crack or chip
  • Repeated dental procedures

Whatever the reason, Dr. Weinstein will always strive to treat your condition and give you relief as quickly as possible.

Root Canal Therapy

During a root canal, the goal is to clear out the infection and allow your tooth to heal. We do this by creating a small access in your tooth and using advanced rotary instruments to completely remove diseased tissue and bacteria. Dr. Weinstein will place medication in the root and fill it with a rubbery material to prevent reinfection. He will then place a temporary restoration on your tooth during the healing process.

Your body’s natural immune system will take over, and although some sensitivity for a few days is common, you should feel significantly better with each passing day.

After Your Root Canal Treatment

After a couple of weeks of healing, we will invite you back to our office to check the progress of your tooth. If it is completely healed, we will recommend a permanent restoration to protect and seal your tooth.

Root canal therapy causes your natural tooth to become more brittle. Since it has a tough job to do – chewing the foods you love – Dr. Weinstein may recommend a dental crown to provide the best protection.

Root canal therapy combined with the proper restoration can add decades to the life of your tooth.
